The
conference “Pacific Archaeology: assessments and prospects”,
celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first Lapita excavation in 1952
and the career of Pr. Richard Shutler Jr., has taken place a few months
ago now in Koné and Nouméa. It has taken some time for the organizing
team to recover, but the meeting has gone far beyond all that we had
hoped. We would like at the end of this year 2002 to thank all the
people who have taken some time to make this event a success, and all
the participants who have made the effort to come to New Caledonia. The
conference has had a strong impact on the populations of our
archipelago, opening the minds on another way to see the past.
As a final remembering of this event, we have decided to put on the Web
site that had been put in place by Kevin Kelly and managed by him over
the last year, a set of shots from some great moments, from the opening
ceremony to the “Lifou death march”. We hope that you will
appreciate this selection and that it will give you the stimulus to come
to Tonga for the 2005 Conference.
